Trustees Monday night voted to allow construction of a controversial 24-hour motor freight terminal.

With Trustee Gerald Sutcliffe casting the lone dissenting vote, the board approved Abbott Land and Development Corp.’s request for a special-use permit and variances to allow for outdoor truck storage.

Six weeks ago trustees deadlocked on a similar project, then sent the matter back to the Plan Commission. Abbott then proposed changes that would meet residents’ concerns on pollution, noise and traffic.

Abbott, which will be building the terminal for RPS, said that greater setbacks, higher fences and acoustical berms and more landscaping will alleviate concerns.

RPS Inc., a subsidiary of Federal Express, would operate the 157,000-square-foot terminal in southwest Carol Stream as a package-sorting center.
