Aldermen on Monday night unanimously approved an ordinance to permit officials to suspend the license of a driver with 10 or more outstanding parking or compliance tickets.

In a memo to city officials, Assistant City Atty. Raymond Bartel said, “Every driver needs a driver’s license, and the threat of a suspension will force offenders who would otherwise not pay the fines to pay them rather than risk a suspension.”

Bartel said about 400 drivers have 10 or more outstanding tickets each, adding, “There are a few people with over 400 tickets.”

Licenses may be suspended 45 days after city officials submit a certified report that outlines the outstanding violations.
