The Will County Humane Society Animal Shelter is making progress in resolving the funding crisis that this year threatened to shut down the facility, one of only a dozen in Illinois that does not exterminate unwanted pets.
Mainly as a result of private donations and volunteer efforts, the 27-year-old shelter, at 24109 W. Seil Rd., has been able to rehire most employees and keep its doors open three days a week, according to officials of the facility.
But the society still needs to raise between $12,000 and $15,000 to get completely out of the red, they added.
The shelter depends primarily on donations and memberships in the Humane Society, which costs $30 a year, for its funds.
