Batavia officials were awaiting a package from the U.S. Census Bureau with the final results of a special census conducted by the city in May.

That tally will help determine how much money the city receives from state revenues.

Unofficially, Batavia has grown to 22,369 residents from its 17,076 population in 1990, said Charlotte Musak, the city’s administrative assistant. A special census conducted in 1993 showed population at 20,236.

“Back in 1997 when we decided to do this census we came up with kind of a ballpark figure of what we would collect in additional state motor fuel and income taxes,’ Musak said.

That figure was based on a population increase of 3,000, which would have brought in an additional $162,247 a year in 1999, 2000 and 2001, she said. The state funds are distributed to communities based on population.

The increase from the motor fuel dollars will go toward street improvements, City Administrator Ron Podschweit said, and the increased income tax revenue will go into the city’s general fund.
