Political candidates and groups who post signs in Mokena will be subject to tighter restrictions under an amendment to the zoning ordinance approved Monday night.

The amendment clarifies location restrictions and raises the deposit charged candidates and groups from $50 to $250.

According to Police Chief Stephen Pollak, the changes in the ordinance were prompted by “an increasing amount of these types of signs showing up in the public right of way.”

The amendment bars political signs from public areas, such as rights-of-way and utility poles, and restricts their placement to private property.

Signs cannot be posted until 30 days before the election and must be removed 48 hours after the election. Candidates and groups who flout the rules will forfeit their deposits, officials said.

The amendment proposed by Police Chief Stephen Pollak and recommended by the Zoning Board of Appeals earlier this month is aimed at reducing post-election clutter.
