First time we saw “folkloric” fashion like this was in the ’60s, age of radical chic, social revolution and musical evolution. War was out and love was in, as we marked our baby steps toward global awareness. Causes for the underrepresented became causes celebre for the fashionable cognoscenti. Our fashion icons were as polarized as Jackie Kennedy and Janis Joplin (recommended reading: “Radical Rags: Fashion of the Sixties,” by Joel Lobenthal). Clothes reflected the mood and where people’s heads were. This ’60s influence has been wafting through fashion for a few seasons now. You will see even stronger hints this fall. Some fashion is decidedly hippie funk, rock-star major or ice-princess cool. It will be a season to remember.
