Steger trustees have unanimously approved a formal resolution that blasts the state’s current property tax system as “inefficient” and blames Cook County’s eroding commercial and industrial tax base on “extremely high real estate taxes.”
The resolution also calls on the state to reduce its reliance on property taxes to fund education and government services.
The model resolution was provided by Bert Docter, a member of the Governor’s Commission on Property Tax Reform. Docter, who spoke at a Village Board meeting last month, said passage of the resolution by area municipalities will aid the commission in its efforts to reform the current property tax-based funding system.
Docter, a South Holland-based general contractor, is chairman-elect of the Homewood-based Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce. He said the model resolution reflects the chamber’s opposition to Cook County subsidization of homeowners’ property tax bills with commercial and industrial property taxes.
