No American golfer is more revered in Great Britain than Tom Watson, as much for his attitude as his achievement. The Open began Thursday with Watson, 48, the winner of five British Opens, more a sentimental than a betting choice. After all, he is just two years from the Senior Tour. And yet, he won a PGA event in May, the Colonial in Texas. He can still play and there would be no more popular winner here, not even Lee Westwood, the English version of Tiger Woods.
