John Stachniak, formerly director of alumni relations at Benedictine University, has been appointed acting athletic director for the school, Benedictine officials said Monday.

That post had been vacant since February, when James Krause resigned after admitting to what university officials described as “the misappropriation and mismanagement of university funds,” primarily gate receipts from athletic events.

Stachniak’s appointment is for one year, said Benedictine spokeswoman Sherri Dauskurdas. The university plans to begin a nationwide search for a new athletic director next spring, Dauskurdas said, and Stachniak could be among the applicants for the position.

Stachniak, whose previous Benedictine duties included overseeing the annual fund, has worked closely with the athletic department and school teams, known as the Eagles, on a variety of projects, including homecoming events and an invitational golf outing.

Benedictine baseball coach John Ostrowski will become assistant athletic director, the university said.
