A small fire that forced the evacuation of a day-care center Tuesday might have had a small cause.

Firefighters said a bird’s nest resting on a wire might have sparked flames in a section of the roof of The Children’s Gallery, 23235 W. Lincoln Highway, according to Lisa Nico, director of the center.

Plainfield Fire Protection District Capt. Bob Chearo said the blaze started about 10:30 a.m. Some smoke seeped into the building.

Teachers called firefighters when they noticed the smoke, Nico said.

The building was evacuated, and, “All the parents were contacted, and all the children were sent home,” he added.

Nico said 28 children ages 2 to 8 and four teachers were in the building at the time of the fire.

Teachers handled the situation calmly, and the children seemed to see it as an adventure, she said.

The interior of the building was not damaged, and The Children’s Gallery will reopen Thursday, Nico said.
