The New Lenox Zoning Board of Appeals this week shot down an oil company’s request for larger-than-average signs but left the door open for some setback variations in the planned reconstruction of a gas station.
Marathon Ashland Petroleum plans to demolish the Speedway station at 800 W. Maple St. (U.S. Highway 30) and replace it with a gas station and convenience store, engineer John Lektorich told the Zoning Board on Monday.
He said the station needs larger signs to attract motorists on U.S. Highway 30 and needs a shorter setback from the highway to allow room for tankers to deliver gasoline.
Board members reaffirmed their reluctance to allow variances from the sign code, but they urged consideration of other front setback options.
