The Des Plaines City Council voted 6-2 to allow the Park District to install up to 10 video games in the district-operated Mountain View Mine Adventure Golf Course clubhouse, 510 E. Algonquin Rd.
The measure passed on first reading Monday night. If formally approved by the council later this summer, the Park District would be exempt from a ban on video games in facilities without liquor licenses, although several businesses have special-use permits allowing them to skirt the rule.
“I hope this is being done more to give the kids something to do rather than just as a way to enhance revenue,” said Ald. Tom Christiansen.
Park District Director David Markworth said, “Our thought is that this would be a family facility and closely supervised.”
The video games would only be available during the mini-golf season between May and October, Markworth said.
If approved, the games would probably be installed next spring, he said.
Aldermen Wayne Elstner and Tony Arredia voted against the proposal.
