Officials at a subsidiary of Federal Express have changed their minds and are now interested in building a motor freight terminal in southwest Carol Stream.

RPS Inc., the FedEx subsidiary, is willing to give the project’s developer, Abbott Land and Development Corp., another try at getting zoning and other matters approved by Carol Stream officials, said Betsy Momich, speaking for RPS.

“We would certainly be interested in the site if they can work out the terms with the village,” Momich said.

A public hearing on Abbott’s latest proposal is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 13 at Village Hall.

Trustees deadlocked on the first project in early June and then voted to allow for another hearing after Abbott representatives said that higher and longer berms, acoustical fencing and larger setbacks from the residences would reduce noise.

Abbott is still seeking a special-use permit to build the 157,000-square-foot facility because it would have outdoor truck storage. RPS would operate the terminal as a package-sorting center.

Nearby residents say that the project would only increase truck traffic and noise and hurt their neighborhood.
