Construction of a bicycle path through Wheeling’s north side from Dundee Road to Lake-Cook Road could begin this summer.

At Monday night’s Village Board meeting, trustees voted 6-0 to rent part of a Commonwealth Edison Co. right of way that bisects the village. The 20-year lease will cost the village $1 a year.

“We’ve cleared one of the last big hurdles before we could get this going,” Community Development Director Michael Klitzke said after the meeting.

Klitzke said the bike path, one of many planned by area municipalities, will connect with existing and planned paths in neighboring Buffalo Grove.

The project is a joint effort by local governments of the two villages and their park districts and Rotary Clubs, officials said.
