Police are investigating an alleged hate crime after someone tossed newspaper clippings covered with hand-written racial slurs into the front yard of an African-American resident.

It is the second time in two months that such clippings have been left near the black man’s home, said Police Cmdr. Christopher Surdel. The most recent incident occurred June 16.
Surdel said the scrawlings on the clippings were not threatening but referred to African Americans in a disparaging way. Surdel said the victim has not received any other threats and said no other hate crimes have been reported recently.
“We have an extra watch patrolling that neighborhood because we are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior in Mokena,” Surdel said.
