A 34-year-old Carol Stream man, who told a crisis counselor he had a handgun, surrendered without incident late Tuesday after a two-hour standoff with police.
Police said the man, who lived at the Covered Bridges apartment complex at North Avenue and Schmale Road, called the DuPage County Crisis Center and told a counselor he was depressed and wanted to kill himself.
After informing the counselor that he had a .45-caliber handgun and a friend with him in his apartment, the center called police, said Deputy Chief James Linane, the police spokesman.
Carol Stream police arrived on the scene, Linane said, and officers were talking with the man on the phone while the department’s emergency team was getting into position.
A family member and a police negotiator eventually talked the man into surrendering, Linane said. His weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.
Linane said it was never a hostage situation and that the man had made threats to himself and police, but not to his roommate, who was with him throughout the standoff.
The man was taken into custody and taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield for examination.
