A DuPage County truck driver was killed after running into the back of a semitrailer truck that was stopped in traffic on the Tri-State Tollway near the Waukegan toll plaza, police said Tuesday.

Alvin Russell, 33, of Glen Ellyn was driving a two-axle box truck in the southbound lane Monday when he came upon a semi that was stopped in traffic due to a backup at the toll plaza, state police said.

Police said Russell did not slow down in time and tried to turn onto the shoulder to avoid hitting the semi. He ended up crashing into the right rear of the semi with the front left end of his truck, police said.

The accident occurred at 2:10 p.m. Russell was pronounced dead at 3:16 p.m. at Provena St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan.

The driver of the semi, Kevin Downs, 41, of Brownsburg, Ind., was not injured. Downs also was not charged in the accident, police said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
