Steger is accepting bids on 76 surplus lots zoned residential and light industrial in Steger’s industrial park.

The 28 industrial lots and 48 residential lots are on the village’s east side. Bids will be accepted until Aug. 3 and must be accompanied by a $1,000 earnest deposit.

The village requires all purchasers to build on the lots within one year, said Village President Louis Sherman.

Two other pieces of land are up for bid. The first, north of 34th Street on the west side of Union Avenue, is a property where the village is digging a stormwater detention pond. Sherman said a business owner wants the land to expand his business.

The second piece, south of 34th Street and west of Loverock Avenue, is a small stretch of land previously used for 35th Street.

To save costs, the village typically holds onto land until contacted by would-be purchasers. When there is a general interest in the surplus property, the village advertises it for sale, Sherman said.
