Members of the Glenbard High School District 87 Board of Education on Monday night called for a public meeting to ask parents how the district should establish its “no pass, no play” rules for all extracurricular activities.

No time or place was set, but officials said meetings probably will not be held until after the 1998-99 school year begins.

School officials hope to take a cautious approach in drafting language that will not penalize students. A law passed by the Illinois General Assembly calls for a policy to be in place no later than the 1999-2000 school year.

For years students have had to pass four classes to participate in after-school sports, but now the board wants input on similar rules that could affect participation in activities ranging from drama club to the student council.

District officials discussed whether to base eligibility on overall grade-point average or on whether the student obtains a passing grade in each class.
