FREEDOMLAND
By Richard Price, Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing, 6 hours, abridged, $25. Read by Joe Morton.
Cymbals and synthesizer provide unnecessary background music in this tense, urban drama by the author of “Clockers.” Set in Dempsy, N.J., but obviously influenced by the Susan Smith case, “Freedomland” begins with a white woman claiming she was carjacked by a black man who drove off with her young son asleep in the back seat. Actor Joe Morton reads with authority, switching perspective from a detective to a reporter with ease.
