Poster girl: Conservation, not fame, is the goal of 7-year-old Maggie Breen of Bannockburn. Maggie’s drawing of animals and recycling symbols won the 2nd grade division of the National Council of State Garden Clubs’ Woodsy Owl 1998 Poster Contest. She was the only student from Illinois to win in the contest, for grades 1 through 5.

But even though she is happy that her poster, crammed with animals and recycling signs, will be in the 1999 U.S. Forest Service calendar, she has no intention of entering more contests.

When Maggie returned recently from Denver, where she received recognition and a savings bond at the council convention, she was asked how she felt about winning. “Embarrassed. I just really like animals and what’s good for the environment. Recycling is good for the environment, so it is also good for animals,” she said. This is one winner who is more interested in going to Sea World than to Disney World. “I want to be a conservationist and work at Sea World or the International Wolf Center,” Maggie said.
