Soneando Trombon (RykoLatino)
Jimmy Bosch is a hell of a musical director for Mark Anthony, the current prince of New York salsa. As orchestra leader during the live performances, Bosch pushes the ensemble into heavy, muscular grooves– his trombone a whisper, then howling with pleasure. When he played with Manny Oquendo and Libre, Bosch could always be counted on for the most exultant solos. And that’s the problem with “Soneando Trombon”: as a studio recording it falls flat next to Bosch’s live show. Without his presence, the music is fairly forgettable. It’s danceable, of course, its clave authentic and key, but it lacks originality and the spirit that Bosch brings to his music in the flesh.
