Silver Charm will miss Sunday’s Hollywood Gold Cup because of a 102-degree fever the horse had on Wednesday.

Trainer Bob Baffert said an initial temperature reading appeared normal. However, when workers tried to feed last year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner in his Santa Anita stall, he showed little interest in eating. A second check showed his temperature increased.

– Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association President Joe Kasperski has blasted Sportsman’s Park for not making the track available for training during the meeting at next-door Hawthorne Race Course that will begin Wednesday and continue through Nov. 28. Sportsman’s, which will end its meeting Tuesday, won’t be available because it is being reconstructed to become a dual-purpose thoroughbred and auto-racing facility.

Pro basketball: Joseph Crawford has been charged with tax fraud, the eighth NBA referee named in an airline ticket scheme. Crawford, 46, of Havertown, Pa., offered his resignation to the league and will plead guilty, his lawyers said. The NBA officials were accused of downgrading first-class airline tickets purchased by the league for cheaper seats and pocketing the difference without telling the IRS. Crawford failed to report $82,500 in taxable income from 1991-93, authorities said.
