A 33-year-old Des Plaines man has until Wednesday to decide the fate of a 12-foot Burmese python officials say he is illegally keeping in his apartment.

Police said they happened upon the snake while answering an unrelated call early Monday at an apartment the man shares with his girlfriend in the 1100 block of South Arnold Court.

Concerned that the snake was dangerous, police contacted officials at Brookfield Zoo, who informed officers the snake was not only potentially deadly, but illegal to keep as a pet in Illinois.

Police said the snake was in an aquarium. The man was initially given 24 hours to get rid of the snake, but had apparently not done so before that deadline passed Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, police said, they told the man he had until Wednesday to decide whether to get rid of the snake on his own or have police turn it over to an animal welfare agency.
