It was just another normal week in the ongoing Dodger soap opera: Their $36 million outfielder, Raul Mondesi, was arrested for investigation of drunken driving, and their pitching ace, Ramon Martinez, was likely lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Expect another bombshell to come any day–the firing of Manager Bill Russell, who has sported a deer-in-headlights look ever since Mike Piazza was traded from under his nose. Originally, it was believed that Russell would have until the All-Star break to get the team going, but after the Dodgers fell 10 1/2 games behind San Diego, that timetable likely was moved up. Said GM Fred Claire: “My sense of the situation, frankly, is that the team has to start to move forward. I’m not going to say that the next few days are make or break, but I’m not going to deny that there are things we would like to see happen.”
