The best eye in sports is an enemy of his own people. Jerry Krause, master scout, looks like the man selling pretzels and gets the same measure of respect. What if he dressed like Dave Checketts? What if he had dribbled like Jerry West? Would Krause then be hailed for erecting a dynasty, or would he still be condemned for letting it fall? The answers are as moot as Utah’s pick-and-roll. Krause often is described as rumpled, difficult, devoid of social grace. But if he shouldn’t be the first guy you’d invite to your Caribbean cruise, he should be the first you’d ask to run your team. . . . Krause has done it better than any executive of his time. When Michael Jordan leaves, that deserves to be cited. Chicago should at least thank its general manager before applying the tar and feathers.
