Tinley Park officials gave preliminary approval Tuesday night to an agreement to build a 12-acre detention pond that would provide flood relief to the village and neighboring Orland Park.
The agreement covers the construction and maintenance of Pond G, a detention area planned for 171st Street and 80th Avenue in Tinley Park on Park District property commonly known as “the farm.”
The project is significant because it involved cooperation of four agencies, according to Tinley Park Village Manager Dave Dorgan: the village, its Park District, Orland Park and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Fernway Park, an Orland Park subdivision, will be a major beneficiary of Pond G, but several Tinley Park subdivisions also will benefit, Dorgan said.

The state agency’s share of the project is $724,000; Tinley Park’s, $930,000; and Orland Park’s $819,000, according to Dorgan, adding that Tinley has been stowing away developers’ fees for the project since the early 1980s. The Park District will be responsible for pond maintenance.
