It was deja vu all over again. In the first round of last spring’s playoffs, the Bulls had taken on a young, feisty bunch from Washington that believed the series would truly measure its place in the NBA pecking order. Now, 12 months later, the opponent was a young, feisty bunch from New Jersey.

The Nets measured up well in Game 1 at the United Center, rushing off to an early lead and then rushing back to tie it 80-80 with less than 5 minutes left. The Nets carried the Bulls into overtime and were on the cusp of an upset.

But near the end of overtime, the differences between the teams was clear, and the series turned the Bulls’ way in a 96-93 victory.

The Nets lost by five in Game 2, by 15 at home in Game 3, all the while believing the Bulls were beatable if a few more shots had fallen.

This, too, echoed the sentiments Washington wailed last spring, as did the final thought muttered by these Nets. “You have to remember, this is a learning experience for us,” coach John Calipari said. They did not yet know enough to measure up.
