Trustees were asked Monday night to consider a formal resolution that calls on the state to reduce its reliance on property taxes to fund education and government services.

The action was proposed by Bert Docter, a member of the Governor’s Commission on Property Tax Reform.
Docter, chairman-elect of the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce, offered Steger trustees a model resolution that blasts the property-tax system as “inefficient” and blames Cook County’s eroding commercial and industrial tax base on the “extremely high real estate taxes in Cook County.”
Docter, a South Holland-based general contractor, said passage of the resolution by area municipalities will aid the commission in its efforts to reform the system.
Docter said his group is asking 70 south suburban municipalities to pass the model resolution.
