State Rep. George Scully (D-Flossmoor), a longtime supporter of a proposed third regional airport, now says the best site might be 40 miles northeast of Peotone.

Speaking last week in Steger to a group of trustees and residents, Scully repeated his belief that a third regional airport is vital to the economic health of the southern suburbs. But the Peotone site is not necessarily the best location, he said.

“I’ve always liked the Lake Calumet site,” Scully said of the Chicago South Side location favored by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Originally a supporter of the third-airport proposal, Daley opposed the project after the Chicago South Side site lost to Peotone and other locations to the south.

Scully’s announcement brings him more in line with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Glenn Poshard, who has said other sites than Peotone might be better suited for the proposed facility. It also should appeal to Scully’s Crete constituents, who have expressed concerns about jet-related noise if a facility were built to the south.

Nevertheless, Scully said he believes a third airport will be built in eastern Will County between Peotone, Monee and Beecher.

Acknowledging Daley’s argument that a facility in eastern Will County would undercut O’Hare International and Midway Airports, Scully said, “He’s just doing his job. He’s looking out for the economic interests of Chicago.”

Downplaying conflicts between Peotone opponents and proponents, Scully said the facility should be built soon or the opportunity will be lost to competing interests.
