AN IDEAL HUSBAND
By Oscar Wilde, Penguin Audiobooks, 2 hours and 45 minutes, $16.95. Read by Derek Jacobi and Jane Lapotaire.
Played with flair by actress Jane Lapotaire, intrepid Mrs. Cheveley disrupts the household of Sir Robert Chiltern, a successful politician who has concealed secrets of his past from his fragile, sanctimonious wife. Wilde displays his usual wit in this political satire, lampooning Victorian high society and capturing even minor characters with savage, pithy lines like “the young attache known for his neckties and his Anglomania.”
