To Heaven and Back (Fingerprint)
Though Peter Gabriel, Bono and Bruce Cockburn cite him as an influence, The Call’s Michael Been has long labored as an unsung member of the rock intelligentsia. “To Heaven and Back” is a dense, swampy effort that pours out from the heart, engages the mind and lands its share of punches in the gut. Few singer-songwriters address spirituality with as much depth and desperation as Been, whether recounting Judas’ betrayal of Jesus (“Criminal”) or the first-person struggle of “World On Fire.”
