Our Flick of the Week is “Six Days, Seven Nights,” in which Harrison Ford and Anne Heche play would-be lovers stranded on a tropical island.
The big issue raised by the media involving this film is whether we can accept Heche’s character declaring her love and Ford’s character declaring his because Heche has acknowledged that she is a lesbian.
To me, that is a totally specious issue because actors constantly pretend to be in love with characters that they don’t really love.
In other words, this is a no-brainer for Heche and Ford, who are simply terrific in the film. Ford recalls the easygoing charm and bemusement of Cary Grant as a pilot shuttling Heche, a magazine editor, about the islands. Heche, who radiates intelligence in her every role, comes across as sort of a super-smart version of Meg Ryan and, as a consequence, is eminently watchable even when the screenplay here resorts to manufactured bickering.
