A proposal to update the political sign ordinance discussed by the Mokena Village Board in a work session Monday. It would set a maximum sign size and increase the cash deposit required before a sign can be put up.
The maximum size of the signs would be 4 feet by 8 feet, and the deposit would be raised to $250 from $50 from each candidate or referendum sponsor.
Deposits would be forfeited if signs are not removed within 48 hours of polls’ closing. Candidates and referendum sponsors who do not pay the deposit would be subject to a fine of $100 per sign.
The proposal also is more specific about sign placement, barring political signs from public rights of way, utility poles and village-owned property.
