Helping businesses recover some of the losses sustained during prolonged road work on U.S. Highway 30 should be on the village agenda, a New Lenox trustee said recently.

Many of the businesses that line the area where road work began a year ago have lost customers and income while repairs snarled traffic, according to Trustee Patrick Flynn.

Flynn suggested a 60-day moratorium on the ordinance prohibiting temporary signage, such as banners, that would help the neglected businesses attract attention.

Another step the village could take would involve putting up signs announcing the end of the road project and urging residents to shop locally, Flynn said.

Trustees said they will consider Flynn’s proposal.
