Trustees in Mokena are considering tighter restrictions on political signs that would affect their time of removal and cost.

A draft ordinance discussed at a recent work session would require that political signs be removed within 24 hours of the election, rather than the currently-required 48 hours.

The proposed statute would also raise the required deposit to $250 from each candidate or each referendum sponsor from $50 from each candidate.

The new rules would bar political signs from the public rights-of-way and restrict them to private property.

Some trustees suggested that a proposed 9-square-foot maximum size for signs might be too restrictive.
