By Jon Krakauer, Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing, 467 minutes, $29.95. Read by the author.
In May 1996, journalist and avid climber Jon Krakauer joined an expedition on Mt. Everest led by an expert guide. A rogue storm blew in, eventually killing nine climbers, including the guide. Krakauer candidly explores the possibilities of blame in the tragedy–including his own–and his voice grows hoarse at times, especially when he describes the plight of a climber who’d been left for dead but somehow later stumbled into camp.
