The Schaumburg Zoning Board of Appeals has narrowly recommended approval for a home business, Cambridge Carpets, which would show carpet samples to prospective buyers.

Board members voted 4-3 to recommend Village Board approval despite testimony from neighbors who disagreed with planning officials. Planners contend the proposed home carpet business would be similar to other home businesses allowed by the village.

Cheryl Barone, who lives behind the house in question, said there is a big difference between a carpet sales operation and, say, a home day-care center.

“This is something that is generating a retail sales tax,” Barone said. “This is not a service.”

Pamela Siligmueller, who is proposing the business, said she would bring in no more than three people per day to show carpet samples. Zoning Board members capped the number of client visits to six per day.

In other action, members unanimously approved a site plan to build a World Savings Bank in the Towne Square Shopping Center near Roselle Road and Illinois Street.

The Oakland, Calif.-based bank recently opened a branch in Westchester. For its Schaumburg location, the bank proposes a 4,000-square-foot building with a drive-through lane and a canopy with two teller stations.

The Village Board is scheduled to vote on both items Tuesday.
