The Village of Steger is seeking providers of property and casualty insurance to replace the municipal self-insurance pool it helped form in 1982.

“We’ll be out by Oct. 1,” said Village President Lou Sherman.

Sherman said the decision to leave the South Town Agency for Risk Management municipal insurance pool was reached after other villages left. In September, Crete, Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Homewood and Lansing gave 12 months’ notice of intent to withdraw.

Sherman said. “All the big communities left. We were concerned about (the pool’s) ability to pay claims.”

The insurance pool formed to provide member towns’ property and casualty insurance at cheaper and more consistent premiums than generally available through private insurance carriers.
