The MTV Movie Awards show, held in a Santa Monica Airport hangar and to be aired Thursday, never will be confused with the infinitely more stuffy Academy Awards. Perhaps because stakes aren’t so high for nominees, the atmosphere is looser, the comedy tends to be more irreverent, fashions are funkier and an edgy performer like Samuel L. Jackson gets to host.

For a while Saturday, it looked as if “Titanic”–nominated in eight of 14 categories, including Best Kiss and Best Villain–struck an iceberg with unpredictable MTV viewers, who, last year, picked “Scream” as Best Movie. But after losing to “Face/Off” for Best Action Sequence and Best On-Screen Duo, and Neve Campbell aced Kate Winslet for Best Female Performance, “Titanic” finished strong by taking Best Male Performance and Best Movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio, not nominated for an Oscar and a no-show here, gave a taped thank-you.

Mike Myers (“Austin Powers”) and Adam Sandler (“The Wedding Singer”) were uncharacteristically subdued in dedicating wins to Phil and Brynn Hartman, who died in a murder-suicide Thursday. Other winners: Heather Graham (“Boogie Nights”), Will Smith (“Men in Black”) and Clint Howard, brother of filmmaker Ron Howard, given a Lifetime Achievement Award for numerous character roles.
