“There is such demand for programming in this community,” John Curran, director of parks and recreation, said. “There are many programs we would add” if a recreation center were built.
The proposed site for the center is at 171st Street and 80th Avenue, on property known as the Farm.
Curran made the case for a recreation center during a meeting between park officials and Village Board members last week when he cited a lack of space for park programs.
A 1992 Park District referendum issue for a tax increase for construction of the center was rejected by voters.
However, Curran said now there are several differences. “We would be seeking a substantial amount less than that,” he said.
The referendum issue six years ago sought $11.4 million, but Curran said the 60,000-square-foot building under consideration would cost about $6 million. The center would not include a pool complex the district may want to add someday, he said.
Curran said the board must decide by mid-August whether to put the question to voters in November.
