A 19-year-old man was killed Monday night when he walked into traffic on Interstate Highway 57 after he became upset over locking his car keys in the trunk of his vehicle while changing a flat tire.

Gregory Preston of the 4000 block of Charleston Road in Matteson was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m. Monday in Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The accident occurred about 11:20 p.m. after both tires on the passenger side of the white Chevrolet Lumina he was driving became flat as he traveled in the northbound lanes.

Preston pulled over onto the right shoulder of the expressway near Parnell Avenue to change the tires. He became angry when he accidentally locked his keys in the car’s trunk and walked into the center lane of the expressway where he was hit by a black 1996 Chevrolet Blazer, witnesses told police.
