New Lenox officials said Tuesday night that they will adopt an ordinance regulating adult-oriented businesses next month.
Mayor John Nowakowski said “we’re attempting to be pro-active” in considering the proposal.
The New Lenox business mix does not now include adult-oriented businesses, such as gentlemen’s clubs or adult bookstores, but village officials want to be prepared.
The proposal under consideration is modeled on a Lansing ordinance that recently survived a court test, an important asset because regulation of adult-oriented businesses involves “free speech issues,” according to Planning and Development Administrator Carrie Hansen.

Under the terms of the ordinance, New Lenox will require adult-oriented business to locate in an area with industrial zoning and secure a special-use permit.
The ordinance would prohibit selling or serving alcoholic beverages on the premises, which must be at specified distances from homes, schools and churches.
Lansing resident Kathy Valente, who attended the session, said the board was making a good move.
