Palatine freshman Tom Hanus was battling a cold during Saturday’s tennis sectional at Fremd. It was about the only thing that gave him trouble.

Hanus easily won the sectional singles title, taking three of four matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. He was unstoppable in the final, beating Fremd senior Jason Kedzuch.

Barrington junior Karl Morgan pushed the top-seeded Hanus in the semifinals, winning two games in the first set before falling 6-2, 6-0.

“I was trying to get used to the court and get my feet moving,” Hanus said of the semifinal match. “After I got into my groove, I was coming into the net and finishing points off. I took control and nothing could stop me.

“When I started today, I was still fighting the cold and I felt kind of weak. But as time and the matches went on, I got stronger and got my rhythm back”

Hanus moves on to the state meet with hopes of being one of the top four seeds. His record is 24-0, with 16 of those wins coming as 6-0, 6-0 victories.

While Hanus controlled the singles competition, the race for the team sectional title when down to the doubles title match. Barrington’s 29 points edged Fremd’s 26 for the championship.

Barrington’s No. 2 doubles team of Andy Fitzgerald and Raheel Zahid beat Fremd’s No. 1 team of Alvin Wang and Ryan Gazda 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 for the doubles title.

Barrington, in winning its sectional for the fourth straight year, was without its best player, junior Chuck Leger, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last week.

Prospect sectional: Glenbrook North dominated, taking the team title 28-18 over Buffalo Grove. Glenbrook North’s Jeremy Edelson beat Prospect’s Donovan Eckhardt 6-0, 6-3 for the singles championship and a battle of teammates secured the top two spots in doubles for the Spartans.

Edelson, a junior, cruised through the first three matches of the tournament without dropping a game point. He went up 5-0 in the second set before Eckhardt finally broke his string with three consecutive points.

“I played real solid,” Edelson said. “I didn’t make any errors. I was probably thinking about (the shutout streak) toward the end. He started going for some different shots and that kind of got to me a little.”

Glenbrook North’s No. 1 doubles team of Jon Kasper and Louis Jacobsohn outlasted teammates Paul Dunn and David Wolff 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for the title.

Evanston sectional: Two-time defending state champion New Trier had both singles players and doubles teams advance to state, winning the sectional title with 40 points to Highland Park’s 21.

The Trevians’ Russell Bennett beat teammate Pete Rose 6-3, 6-1 for the singles title, and Paget Neave and Mike Barhmasel narrowly defeated teammates Joe Smeeton and Robert Quandt 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 7-5 for the doubles crown.

“For us winning this tournament doesn’t matter if we don’t take state,” Bennett said. “You can win every tournament, but the season is a wash if you don’t win state.”
