Des Plaines aldermen have voted 7-0 to reject zoning changes that would have permitted construction of a $17 million development of 20 single-family homes and a mini-warehouse project southeast of Maple and Touhy Avenues.
The northern section of the 8.2-acre parcel would have required rezoning to light industrial use from its present single-family residential status to permit construction of a self-storage complex, said Des Plaines Development Director Mike D’Onofrio.
Plans for the mini-warehouse project by Armadillo Storage, Park Ridge, called for a three-story, 90,500-square-foot building containing 70 units, and three smaller single-story buildings totaling 150 units, for use by businesses and individuals, officials said.
The housing component of the project was proposed by Anthony Tantillo, president of Rosemont-based Tantillo Homes, and would have required 43 zoning variances for lot size and other requests, officials said.
“Staff is opposed to the density and layout of the subdivision and recommends that the variations be denied,” D’Onofrio said.
Tantillo said the homes would have sold for at least $250,000 each. He told aldermen the project as a whole would contribute to the Des Plaines economy. The self-storage project would be well landscaped and “upscale,” he said.
“I’m not against redevelopment, but truthfully, I think this is overdevelopment,” said resident Al Angsten.
At least two aldermen encouraged Tantillo to approach the council again with plans for a residential-only development.
