The board of Des Plaines District 62 voted 7-0 late Monday to appoint Philip DiLallo as the new principal of the year-round Iroquois Community School.

DiLallo, currently head of pupil support services, will take over July 1 at a salary of $86,670. He replaces Thomas Ray, who oversaw last year’s controversial conversion of Iroquois from a junior high into a K-8 community school.

The unanimous vote marked a rare sign of unity for the board on the topic of Iroquois. Three of the seven members ran in last year’s election on a slate that was highly critical of Supt. Bob Willis and how he handled the school’s changeover.

DiLallo has been with District 62 since 1981, spending most of those years as a special-education teacher and administrator. He served four years as principal of the district’s Terrace Elementary before taking over as associate superintendent for pupil support services in 1991.

Among the possible candidates to replace DiLallo is Tavia Floyd, principal at Palatine District 15’s Pleasant Hill Elementary. Floyd was one of four finalists for the Iroquois job.
