Archeologists excavating four small areas along a proposed route of a pipeline in New Lenox turned up pottery fragments and at least one perfect triangular arrowhead Tuesday during the second day of the dig.

Archeologists began stripping topsoil Monday at the New Lenox Park District Sanctuary Golf Course, where a preconstruction archeological survey in 1994 turned up a wealth of Native American artifacts.

In the absence of a major find this time, the land can be used for the pipeline route, archeologist Rochelle Lurie said.

Once Lurie and fellow archeologists Gary Stollnwerk and Clare Tolmie of Midwest Archeological Research Services Inc. have sifted through the soil for remains to take back to the MARS lab in Harvard, Ill., for further study, the 130-by-50-foot site will be covered over until pipeline construction begins in the fall.
