A tribute to mom: For Lorie Carevic of Mokena, success is in the cards.

Lorie, a 12-year-old 6th grader at Mokena Junior High School, was one of 50 state finalists in a Mother’s Day greeting card design contest sponsored by Family Circle magazine and Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp.

Her prize-winning design was a house with a trellis, and the inside message read, “You make our house a home,” she said.

Her grandmother, Edith Saurer of New Lenox, found out about the contest and encouraged her granddaughter to enter. Proud mom Diane Carevic said her daughter is “naturally artistic” and has taken art lessons.

Making it into the top 50 of 32,000 entries netted Lorie more than glory.

The artist now has a stock of KFC gift certificates and a proclamation issued in her honor by the Mokena Village Board.

She seems to prefer letting her art speak for itself, however. When Mayor Robert Chiszar asked her if she wanted to say a few words after he issued the proclamation, she politely declined.
