He is, to put it mildly, a character: He’s a much married man – currently he’s on No. 6. He campaigned for mayor of New York with Jimmy Breslin as his running partner, stabbed his second wife in a drunken fury and had the gall to write a novel about Jesus – in the first person. And at 75, Norman Mailer isn’t about to change his 50-year-old writing method: scribbling 250 days a year, on typing paper, in longhand with a sharpened No. 2 Eberhard pencil. It worked for “The Naked and the Dead.” It worked for “The White Negro.” And it worked for “The Executioner’s Song.” It won him several Pulitzers. So why stop now?
This Friday, the award-winning, pugilistic man of letters will breeze through town to talk about his career-and quite naturally his latest literary effort, “The Time of Our Time,” a retrospective of all things Mailer. This free event takes off at 6 p.m. at the Harold Washington Library Center, Winter Garden, 400 S. State Street (Plymouth Court entrance). Call 312-747-4050.

And as far as we know, Mailer won’t be sporting boxing gloves.
