Three women whose spirit of volunteerism has gone above and beyond the call of duty for Hesed House, an Aurora homeless shelter, will receive special recognition May 17 during the Public Action to Deliver Shelter’s annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner at Wheatland-Salem United Methodist Church in Naperville.
Mary Richards of Aurora, a longtime member of the Kane County Board, has registered hundreds of PADS guests as voters since 1992, the year the Illinois legislature granted homeless persons the right to vote. Richards also explains the voting process to the new voters and offers them a lift to the polls on the day of the election.
Harriet McCabe of Aurora organizes the “Magical Methodist Ministers Bus Tours” several times each year. Through her efforts, hundreds of Northern Illinois Conference Methodist pastors and others have been brought to Hesed House to witness how they minister to poor and homeless people.
Clara Melchiorre, owner of Clara’s Pasta di Casa in Woodridge, long has responded to Hesed House requests and will deliver meals to feed as many as 150 people a night.
“Without our volunteers we would not exist,” said PADS program director Diane Nilan.
